Here is a really good damage chart that doesn't give you specific numbers, but lets you know how long it takes to bring down the highest HP inefected in the game for any weapon.

Melee weapons really hurt the tank.

definitely, if you're playing versus and you are the tank you need to make sure there isn't a survivor smacking your ass.

Talking to your teammates who are playing tank is helpful too, as I often get stuck with someone who is bad at tank because they just chase one person while the other 3 are tee-ing off on their back.
